State Patrol encourages caution around railroads

Wisconsin State Patrol is promoting National Rail Safety Week, informing motorists of why they need to be vigilant at rail crossings.

Last year, Wisconsin had 48 train-related crashes, which resulted in nine injuries and four deaths. Another four were killed and two injured while trespassing on rail properties.

Rep. Mark Pocan, a democrat representing the second congressional district, recently held a virtual meeting to discuss current issues and projects affecting Sauk and Iowa counties.

Court orders cessation of mailed absentee ballots

The Wisconsin Supreme Court issued an order last Friday that instructed clerks across the state not to mail out any absentee ballots until it has been determined whether Green Party presidential candidates Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker will be on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Royal Bank takes steps to acquire 2 branches

A local bank chain is trying to expand to two branches currently occupied by Associated Bank.

Royal Bank hopes to acquire the branches in Richland Center and Prairie du Chien. This is still pending regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

Wisconsin COVID-19 cases increase, but only slightly in Sauk County

The state’s number of positive coronavirus cases continues to climb, according to data from the state Department of Health Services.

As of Monday, Wisconsin had 81,760 confirmed cases, an increase of 567 from the day prior and 6,157 from the week prior. Totals include all counts since testing began in Wisconsin in March.

Many of fall’s red pigments are anthocyanins, which give some plant parts reds, purples and even pinks.

A shrubby maple, mountain maple to some, sports some of the most beautiful pinks of any deciduous plant. Even in burning sunlight, these pinks show well, especially in Northern Wisconsin, where Acer spicatum is common.

More than 31 million meals served to Wisconsin kids during pandemic

Since March, public schools have provided food to more than 31 million children in Wisconsin.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, meals were distributed through lunch and breakfast programs and summer meal offerings. These programs are federally funded by the DPI. A final count of meals was done Aug. 20.
