Move over, slow down for roadside workers, first responders

Wisconsin State Patrol’s law of the month focuses on slowing down and moving over for emergency crews and roadside workers.

National Move Over Day is Oct. 17.

In the last two years, there were 1,676 convictions in Wisconsin for violating the move-over law. Under the law, motorists are required to move to another lane when approaching stopped emergency responders, tow trucks, and utility or maintenance vehicles with warning lights. If getting over is impossible, drivers need to slow down. Violations can result in a citation of $263.

“Emergency responders face significant risks when stopped along highways, especially when they’re outside their vehicle to assist at incident scenes,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Capt. Jason Zeeh of the Southwest Region, in a statement.

“Whether it’s a routine traffic stop, helping a stranded motorist or assisting at a crash scene, law enforcement officers and other emergency responders are often just a few feet away from moving traffic,” Zeeh said. “We all want to get home safely, so we’re asking drivers to be alert, move over or slow down and provide a safety zone for roadside workers.”
