Naturally Speaking White pine’s two cones

Eastern white pine trees are all about cones. Pollen cones, usually tiny, in clusters and near the bottom of a tree, have shed their pollen and fallen from the pine. Some of that pollen was carried by wind to equally tiny seed cones, usually positioned near the tree tops.

Tony Kurtz reacts to winning second term

Tony Kurtz handily won the General Election last Tuesday.

The Republican incumbent from Wonewoc received just over 63 percent of the vote in for the 50th Assembly District, according to unofficial election results. Challenger Mark Waldon, a Democrat from Reedsburg, had nearly 38 percent of the vote.

Sauk County Public Health encourages continued vigilance

Residents are asked to continue following COVID-19 guidelines in Sauk County.

On Monday, the Sauk County Public Health Department released a statement imploring people to stay home if they are sick, leave six feet between strangers or other parties, wear face coverings if possible, wash hands and sanitize often.

Naturally Speaking: Sneezeweed

Common names of plants usually describe some botanical appearance, such as great blue Lobelia or Cardinal flower. Common sneezeweed is not at all common in its informal name.

Rather the name suggests after coming in contact with the plant by inhaling its aroma, and more, an involuntary sneeze may erupt.
