Naturally Speaking: Red-bellied woodpeckers

Red-bellied woodpeckers’ common name, at first glance, appears to be misleading. In addition, the male redbellies have a red nape and crown, while females have just brilliant napes.

Some mistake redbellies for redheads, but that name has been used by another.

Friends group organizes winter ski/snowshoe hike

Park staff and the Friends of Mirror Lake State Park are organizing a winter ski and snowshoe hike from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 5.

Anyone is welcome to participate in one or both activities on two one-mile, torch-lit trails. There will be a bonfire but treats and beverages will not be served due to COVID-19.

Naturally Speaking: Winter evergreens

Evergreen conifers don’t seem to be as green as they were in summer and fall. All the leaves on pines, spruces and firs are getting older the longer that stay on the tree, and darker, and heavy, waxy coating, which helps conserve water winter and summer is some of the reason.

Remember to register chickens, cows, other livestock

Everyone from pig farmers to those who keep backyard chickens is reminded they need to register with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

State law requires livestock owners to register where they keep their animals. Registration is good for three years and is due by July 31.
