When I was a youngster a wise old man told me the best 'cents' I should work for was common sense. Now I'm the old man and it seems common sense is in short supply.
Perhaps it should read, "Life, liberty and the pursuit of Independence!" Independence is a fluid and elusive thing. Our definition of it has changed countless times over the last 250 years, and it will keep changing forever. And that is not a bad thing.
The Sauk County Fair is running this week. Like so many of you, I most enjoy the animal shows and exhibits.

In 2024, a sheriff’s deputy working for the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department was forced out for being lousy at his job. But even though the deputy, Cristian Morales, was flagged in the state’s negative separation database, he ended up being hired a few months later by the Menasha Police Department.
At my age it becomes difficult to buy a watch battery. How long does a watch battery last? How much longer am I going to live? Will one battery last me a lifetime? If I buy two batteries, the unit price is less, but the total is more. If I buy two, where can I put the second one that I can remember if I outlive the first battery?
My question for Michael Brandt after reading his June 25 letter, "Dare to compare," is will we ever see the end of hypocrisy and projection coming from those who fancy themselves as saviors of our democracy?
