Causes of death in 1632 London included fever, age, and the somewhat cryptic “Teeth,” which claimed a staggering 470 lives that year. Six people were found dead in the streets and starved. One person died after being bitten by a mad dog. Another died, somewhat understandably, from being “Affrighted.” Another passed away from vomiting.

“I must not be asking God for the right things.”

Millions of Americans are reaching out to their friends, neighbors and needy strangers. Delivering meals to those fearing leaving home, accompanying children to school, warning neighbors of impending violence, mourning the dead and comforting those missing family members. Americans trying to lessen the suffering of others.

I have written over the years about my six old friends from our days as young social workers in child welfare in Chicago. The seven of us have been friends since 1969, 58 years ago, when we were in our 20's. We have been close ever since.

Presently, President Trump's government is beating, killing, and warehousing its own people. Men, women, and children are fearing their government as Trumpian tyranny abounds.

Why is it that letters like Judy Brey's (February 26), "There are other ways to deal with immigration," never express concern about the rule of law, national sovereignty, the displacement of so many vulnerable American workers and the impact of immigration-fueled population growth on our environment?
