At a meeting of the Sauk County Historical Society in 1909, H.E. Cole — an early settler and surveyor in Sauk County — spoke of Baraboo’s first settler: “Abe Wood was a Kentuckian; his wife was a Winnebago [woman]. He was an adventurer; she was a child of the wilderness.”
