Evergreen boughs used for holiday decorating may have the added attraction of seed or pollen cones attached.
Most Christmas trees, including firs, lose their seed cones because they shatter to release the seeds. Pines and spruces do not and hang onto some of the seed cones even after the seeds have fallen.
