Tax filing season may be several months away, but AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites in communities across Wisconsin are already seeking volunteers who want to serve their communities by providing free tax-filing help to those who need it most.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is joining partners throughout the state and country this week to remind motorists that “safety starts with you – move over or slow down” for flashing lights on the side of the road to keep first responders safe.

November is the month many Wisconsinites enjoy holidays and traditions, including hunting season. While hunting can be a fun activity for many families and boost well-being, if it involves a firearm, safe storage is vital to prevent injuries including self-harm by kids.

The Alliant Energy Foundation raised its largest donation ever to combat hunger.

During the annual Drive Out Hunger fundraiser, the foundation brought in $550,000 to support programs in Wisconsin and Iowa. It’s the largest donation in the 19-year history of the fundraiser. The year also included a record number of sponsors.

There are several reasons a deer hunter might consider donating a deer’s venison to another person, or to a system that makes the meat available to individuals of need or through food pantries.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) learned Sept. 16 that the agency had impermissibly released protected health information of 1,723 persons in its care, as well as individuals who were discharged from DOC in response to a public records request.

Consumers have choices, and during open enrollment periods when time is limited, it is important to understand the differences between health insurance and medical discount plans. These plans are sometimes mistaken for insurance; but in other cases, they are misrepresented by dishonest sellers.

American chestnut trees are not native in Wisconsin, but will grow, at least for a while, if planted by seed or nursery stock, which is available. If the dreaded disease, chestnut blight caused by a parasitic fungus, is blown or carried in, the tree is likely to die but may stump sprout repeatedly.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) will work with local law enforcement agencies across the state this Halloween to monitor sex offenders on probation or parole. The annual partnership helps to keep children safe during trick-or-treat activities.

On Aug. 8, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers signed “a proclamation honoring a uniquely American folk dance that draws influence from a variety of cultures.”
