Government shutdown affects Refuge

Refuge Week activities scheduled at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge have been cancelled due to the government shutdown. Staff is furloughed and funding is unavailable.

Activities were scheduled Oct. 15-18.

National Wildlife Refuge Week is Oct. 12-18 at Necedah NWR

October 12-18 is designated as National Wildlife Refuge Week. Wisconsin is home to four refuges: Necedah, Horicon, Trempeleau and Upper Mississippi River.

Necedah NWR is celebrating with special events geared toward all ages and a variety of interests. Events are free and open to the public but some require reservations.

Naturally speaking: Edible mushrooms

Maybe the greatest edible mushroom, at least in fall, appears to be plentiful this autumn in its own habitat. More formally known as hen of the woods but so as not to confuse gatherers most now use a Japanese name, Maitake (my-tak-ee) which translates to “dancing mushroom.”

Cooperative releases list of top cows through June

South Central DHI has announced its list of best-performing animals through June.

The top-producing Holstein, P-3733, came from Bells Udder Farm in Camp Douglas. She produced 43,001 of milk that tested 4.5 percent and 4927 cheese yield.
