Law of the Month: Be careful around big vehicles

For February, the Wisconsin State Patrol advises motorists to be aware of the risks when driving and operating around semis and other commercial vehicles.

Since 2017, Wisconsin has averaged 7,140 crashes involving large trucks every year. Preliminary data shows 89 people died of those incidents in 2021.

State Patrol said it’s up to both CMV operators and other drivers to ensure safety on the roadway.

 “Large trucks like semis need extra room on the roads, especially in the winter when conditions can change quickly,” Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Anthony Burrell said. “All drivers should keep a safe distance from other vehicles, be aware of blind spots and pass carefully.”

In 2021, nearly 15,000 CMV operators were stopped for traffic violations. Another 9,700 other drivers were pulled over for violations that affected safe CMV operation.

Due to high demand for consumer products, Wisconsin has seen a significant increase in the number of new motor carriers. This means drivers need to be extra cautious. In the meantime, State Patrol is communicates with interstate carriers to help develop safety practices. It also partners with technical colleges to offer free training seminars to CMV operators and carriers.

Drivers can make the roads safer by using caution when passing and staying out of blind spots. Don’t tailgate, and remember to use and watch for turn signals. Violating these laws can result in tickets and fines.
