Weston Elementary celebrates Read across America Week

Students and staff at Weston Elementary School marked Read across America Week with Dr. Seuss-themed activities. This annual celebration of literacy takes place March 1-5.

Since Dr. Seuss’s birthday is March 2, his works are often featured.

The Eagle Pride Parent Group sponsored cupcakes for the kids. There were also dress up and trivia days. In addition, cafeteria employees prepared Seuss-inspired dishes.

Numerous residents, business leaders, students and staff served as guest readers. These included John Soltwedel of Soltwedel’s Store in Cazenovia; Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Kyle Mueller; Richland County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Liz Reddemann; Chelsey Bodendein of Royal Bank in Cazenovia; Lucas Oliver of Lime Ridge Agri Supply; Cazenovia Fire Department Chief Darrell Slama; Pastor Don Glanzer, a veteran from Hillpoint VFW Post 3434; Diane Fry of Cazenovia Ambulance; Marcus and Lexy McCauley of Hillpoint Fire Department; Doug Duren, Weston alumnus; Weston School Board Member Carrie Heiking; Weston Elementary School Principal Jason Meyer; and many other high school students and district employees.

Due to COVID restrictions, readers were pre-recorded to create a virtual file for teachers to share with their students.

Students were challenged to read 25,000 minutes in 10 days. If they did it, Principal Meyer would be turned into a human ice-cream sundae. The students went above and beyond, totaling 34,991 minutes in 10 days. The result was a principal covered in ice cream, syrup, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry. The kids also got ice cream treats — to eat, not wear.
