Obituary: Dennis R. Penning
North Freedom, WI. - Dennis R. Penning, age 74 of North Freedom, WI, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 21, 2025.
Dennis was born July 6, 1950 in Waukesha, WI, to Roman and Shirley (Galoff) Penning. He graduated from Waukesha High School in 1968 after having been a Mighty Mite in parochial school, which he always acknowledged.
Dennis worked for the State of Wisconsin DOT for 42 years as an Engineering Technician. He was an outstanding midfielder and played pro soccer for 12 years for the Waukesha Continentals.
During his life, Dennis was active in the Jaycees, the Moose Club, and was a lifelong member of the Waukesha Rod and Gun Club. He also participated in the Owls Club, was an avid card player, enjoying poker and cribbage. He was a bit of a card and pool shark. He loved to hunt and fish and was known as the “grill master”. He enjoyed spending hours gambling at the casino where he was his most lively self. He truly had a way with animals and was a cat and chicken whisperer. He will be missed for his sly ways and sweet chuckle.
Some Dennis-isms he frequently said were “It’s good to be seen”; “It’s good for the paycheck but bad for the morale” and “Are you still mad at me?”. In his own words,
Dennis wanted to be remembered for being kind, honorable, and a mentor to many, which he was.
Dennis is survived by his children, Shannon (Dan) Schenck, Shawn (Shannon) Weber, Shane (Jeri) Weber; grandchildren, Tyler, Shaylyn, Alicia, Taylor, Dustin, Tim, Alex, Madeline, Sophie; great- grandchildren, Grayson, Theodore, Alice, Ava, Josiah, Zoey, Olivia, Indie; his former wife, Patricia Penning; significant other, Susan Hillmer; and many loyal friends. Also surviving are his siblings, Ron (Arlene) Penning, Mary (Paul) Shepard, John (Debbie) Penning, Kathy (Arnie) Talatzko and David (Jaci) Penning. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Shirley; brother, Roman; and sister, Shirley.

Memorial services were held at 12 p.m. noon on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at Walnut Hill Bible Church, 1900 East St., Baraboo, WI, with Pastor Dan Gunderson officiating, Visitation was at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. A luncheon was served at the church immediately following the service. Baldwin Funeral Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
