Obituary: Virginia M. Smith
Virginia M. Smith, age 87, of Hillpoint, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 15, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on April 16, 1936, the daughter of Harold and Margaret D. (Goetsch) Erdmann. Virginia was baptized on April 26, 1936, and confirmed in her faith on June 5, 1949, in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hillpoint. She was a 1954 graduate of Lime Ridge High School. On July 9, 1960, Virginia was united in marriage to Billy L. Smith at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hillpoint. Together they raised five children. Billy preceded her in death on November 1, 2013.
Virginia was employed as a bus driver for the Weston School District for many years. She also worked at Hankscraft in Reedsburg for 21 years from where she retired. Virginia was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hillpoint. She served on the Altar Guild and as President of the Ladies Guild for several years. She was a member of the Ladies Card Club and enjoyed a good game of Euchre and Sheepshead. Virginia was also an avid Cubs fan. She was a baker, known for her coffee cake and cookies, a gardener, and a canner. Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family, playing cards and dice games, and going on fishing adventures.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Chelsea Mashak; sister, Dorothy Krueger; brothers, Eugene Erdmann and Glen Erdmann; and brother-in-law, Wesley Wermund.
Virginia is survived by her children, Kent (Darcy) Erdmann, Ardith (Steve) Adelman, Lynne (George) Thompson, Janet (Daryl) Stieve, and Emily (Travis) Mashak; grandchildren, Leila (Derek) Larson, Jason Erdmann, Jessica Erdmann, Meagan (Richard) Grabarski, Tara (Trevor) Meyer, Neal Adelman (Krista Mills), Jonathan Thompson (Paige Morris), Nathan Stieve, Amber (Patrick) Pierce, Logan Stieve (Rachel Anderson), Samantha (Terry) Meeks and Hunter Mashak; great grandchildren, Hudson and Wesley Larson, Serenity Erdmann, Torian and Huxslee Erdmann, William and Bennett Grabarski, Kain Meyer, Gabby, Gage and Gunner Mills, Porter and Ashton Pierce, Billy and River Meeks; sisters, Margaret (Tootie) Wermund and Jean (Dwight) Ziech; sisters-in-law, Leslie Erdmann, Avis Roessler and Judie (Rick) Ellett; several nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Virginia M. Smith will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 19, 2024, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hillpoint. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Tuckertown. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Farber Funeral Home, Reedsburg, and on Friday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be made to St John’s Lutheran Church or Agrace Hospice in lieu of flowers.
