Cyril N. Virnig

CROSS PLAINS - Cyril N. Virnig, age 88, of Cross Plains, Wis., passed away on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at UW Hospital. He was born on Sept. 28, 1935, the son of Frank and Bernita (Beuthin) Virnig, in a brick building on Main Street in Cross Plains, at the harness and shoe shop formerly owned and operated by his grandfather.
Cyril married Caroline Medcraft on Feb. 12, 1955, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where he was a lifelong member. He worked as the head mechanic at Highway Service Garage and at the Dodge/Chrysler dealer, back when they sold AMCs and Ramblers. Everyone knew him as a mechanic. He always made sure his kids knew how to change tires, oil and spark plugs. Cyril was an auto enthusiast from an early age and had a modified 1940 Ford that could outrun the police; the only time that they were able to catch him for a ticket was when he was parked at a restaurant. After retiring as an auto mechanic, Cyril worked with his wife, Caroline, at E.I. in Verona.
Cyril is survived by his daughter, Sally Ann (Jim) Bando; granddaughter, Michelle (Adam) Gates; grandson, Michael Bando; great-grandchildren, Emily, Candace and Jimmy Harton; and sisters, Janice Smith and Shirley Ditzman. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Caroline Ruth Virnig; brother, Jaloy Virnig; son, Cyril Christopher Virnig; and granddaughter, Cheryl Harton.
Visitation will be held at ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2947 Thinnes St. Cross Plains, from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023. His funeral Mass and burial will be private.
