Obituary: George Robert Lamke

George Robert Lamke, age 88, of Reedsburg, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, where he had been a resident since 2019.

George was born on March 3, 1933 in Highland, Wisconsin, the eldest son of Elvie and Kathryn (Lampe) Lamke. He graduated from Soldiers Grove High School in 1951. George later graduated from University of Wisconsin – River Falls in 1961 with a double major in mathematics and economics and a double minor in history and political science. He served as a radio maintenance man in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1961 when he was honorably discharged. He also served in the Korean War. In 1961, he began his employment at the Bureau of Labor Statics with the federal government. This position led him to live in several different cities and make many friends throughout the U.S.

George enjoyed reading history books and discussing history. He also enjoyed Dunkin Donuts, soup and bicycling. Bicycling became something that George thoroughly enjoyed. He made several trips throughout the United States and Europe.

On these trips he would stay with people he had met through his employment or in campgrounds. He always had a tent and sleeping bag on his bike trips. He even surprised three young nieces with new ten speed bikes and took them out bicycling. It was always interesting to hear him talk of his trips, the people he met and all the different experiences he encountered.

He is survived by his brother: Donald Lamke, of Reedsburg; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Shirley Link and brother-in-law: Alfred Link; brother: Thomas Lamke and sister-in-law: Helen Lamke; sister in law: Lorrain Lamke and his nephew: Jeffry Link.

Memorial services were held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, November 15, 2021 at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg with Pastor Vicki Brantmeyer officiating. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery with full military honors. There was a visitation from 12 noon until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. The family wishes to thank the staff at Wisconsin Veterans Home at King for their care of George.
