How to save some money during hot weather

Recent muggy weather means central air and window air conditioners are working harder, which equates to higher energy bills.

It is possible to save a few bucks even during the hottest of days though, according to Alliant Energy.

The company offers some advice on how to cut those cooling expenses.

First, make sure shades are closed, especially during the sunniest, hottest part of the day. If you have ceiling fans, use them to help circulate cool air. Just be sure to turn them off when you leave the room.

Try turning the thermostat up a few degrees. In essence, try to keep it as high as possible while maintaining comfort.

Unplug unused electronics. Many items, including small appliances, still pull a small amount of energy even when they are turned off.

Experts also recommend using alternatives to the TV for background noise. Instead, try a radio or white noise app on a phone or tablet. These items use less energy than many televisions.
