Keep eyes on the road when traveling this weekend

With Independence Day falling on a weekend, people across Wisconsin are expected to hit the road to travel for fireworks, barbecues and family outings.

More people means more traffic, and thus greater risks for collisions.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation reminds motorists to make sure everyone in their vehicle is buckled up. Drivers should not use their phones or other electronic devices. Also keep watch in construction zones.

Be sure to check fluid levels and tire pressure before traveling. Follow posted speed limits and be prepared to slow down or stop around road work.

Remember that you are required to move over or slow down if emergency vehicles or police are approaching with lights and sirens. This includes tow trucks and highway maintenance vehicles as well when they are responding to an incident.

If your vehicle breaks down, try to get it safely off the highway, remain buckled up and wait for help to arrive.

All Wisconsin rest areas are open. These sights provide restrooms, as well as possibly vending machines, tourism info, maps and picnic tables, depending on the site.
