Law of the month: Yielding at yellow arrows

Wisconsin State Patrol reminds drivers to remember rules regarding flashing yellow arrows.

These arrows mean that traffic must yield at them before turning left.

These arrows have grown increasingly common at intersections. In these cases, drivers may turn left on them, but they must first yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

According to State Patrol Capt. Jason Zeeh, these arrows were created to help improve safety for everyone.

“A left turn is one of the most dangerous movements a motorist makes,” he said.

It’s important to remember that yellow arrows do not give you the right away, as opposing traffic has the green signal.

You may also make a U-turn unless signs say otherwise. As usual, go only when it’s safe.

If you have a steady green arrow, you have the right away and can go. A steady yellow arrow means “be prepared to stop.” A steady red arrow means you can’t go.

A steady green arrow that means a driver has the right-of-way to make a left turn or make a U-turn unless a sign prohibits U-turns.

Another variation on the yellow arrow is a sign that says: “Left turn—yield on flashing yellow arrow.”
