License extension ends soon for senior drivers

Motorists 60 and older have only a few days left to take advantage of an extension on license renewals.

The Wisconsin DMV’s extension for this demographic ends May 21. Older drivers whose licenses expired after March 12, 2020 can still renew without facing penalties.

Due to COVID-19, the DMV extended the deadline for when these motorists could renew their licenses. This was due to older adults being at risk to the virus.

As of now, the DMV estimates that nearly 20,000 drivers have yet to renew their expired licenses.

Those up to age 64 may renew online at wisconsindmv.gov/renewDL. Certain situations may necessitate visiting a DMV center; start the renewal process to see whether or not this applies to your situation.

Drivers 65 and older must visit a DMV service center to renew.

Those who no longer drive but wish to obtain a free ID for voting purposes may still do so through wisconsindmv.gov/olderdrivers.

Take note that new licenses and ID cards will be mailed. In the meantime, you will receive a printed receipt that can be used as proof of your license’s renewal.
