Wisconsin residents receive $8 million in unclaimed property

More than $8 million was just laying in wait to be claimed, and it’s now in the pockets of Wisconsin citizens.

The Department of Revenue announced that it reunited residents with $8.2 million in unclaimed property.

In many cases, residents are unaware or have forgotten about the money that is rightfully theirs, usually from old accounts, uncashed dividends or insurance policies.

This month, the department mailed letters to 700 residents notifying them that they have more than $2,000 in property to claim. This amounts to $5.5 million.

At the same time, the DOR mailed $2.7 million in checks to those owed less than $2,000. This accounted for another $2.7 million.

This is still only a portion of the unclaimed property left standing in the account. Another $625 million remains unclaimed, and the DOR must hold onto it until owners collect it.

Each year, the department conducts the process of connecting unclaimed property with its owners. Personnel locate, verify and deliver the property to the owners.
