AARP offers community challenge grants

Community organizations and local governments are invited to apply for 2021 AARP Community Challenge Grants.

Since the program began five years ago, funds have supported projects that spark change. Since 2017, AARP has awarded 560 grants across the country.

The deadline to apply is April 14.

Grants range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to thousands or tens of thousands for larger projects.

All types of communities may benefit. Forty percent of past projects took place in rural communities, with another 40 percent going to urban places. Remaining amounts went to suburbs.

Beneficiaries have demonstrated an ability to get additional money or support through public and private donors.

To qualify for a grant, projects must ensure a focus on diversity and inclusion while improving the social environment of a community. They may also support local recovery efforts from coronavirus, with an emphasis on economic development, transportation services or improvements to public spaces. In addition, projects may improve open places, parks and amenities access, as well as deliver a range of transportation and mobility options that improve connectivity, walkability, biking opportunities and roadway improvements. Applicants may also request a grant if their efforts improve the availability and accessibility of affordable housing, or if they are dedicated to civic engagement, addressing challenges and fostering inclusion.

AARP also welcomes submissions that describe other local needs and how innovative ideas may address them.

Grants are open to nonprofits and government entities. Other types of organizations will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

If grants are won, projects must be completed or have been completed by Nov. 10 of this year.
