Don’t imbibe and drive this holiday season

The Wisconsin DOT warns motorists to ditch drunken driving, especially during the holidays.

State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies will be out in force monitoring for intoxicated driving through Jan. 1.

The DOT uses federal funds to support stepped-up efforts, which include not only patrols but also education and outreach.

According to the DOT, alcohol and drug use increased nationwide during the pandemic, which made roads more dangerous despite fewer people driving. So far, fatal crashes involving an impaired driver have increased 23 percent over 2019, and 2020 is not over yet. Previously, the number of fatal crashes was dropping.

Not only are people using alcohol, but there’s also been an increase in motorists abusing prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and illegal narcotics.

To remain safe this season, have a sober designated driver. Never allow an impaired person to get behind the wheel. To find safe rides, use the Drive Sober mobile app available on the WisDOT website.

If you spot a suspected impaired driver, dial 911 and provide as many details as possible about the driver, vehicle and location.
