Naturally Speaking: Tree flowers become nuts

Trees have flowers, at least most of the deciduous ones in this area do.

Why, then, when with so many chances and obligations to “talk” about the blooms are they avoided, ignored or forgotten? Just like other flowers many tree flowers develop into fruit. Those that don’t are the ones that have pollen-only producing parts.

Credit union sheds more than 8 tons of paper

Summit Credit Union processed more than eight tons of paper during its ShredFest on Sept. 28.

The event was held in partnership with the Better Business Bureau and Pellitteri Waste Systems.

The Madison College Board of Trustees has selected three final candidates to succeed President Jack Daniels III, who will retire in January after 11 years with the college.

A stroll through Farm Art/DTour

Part of the Farm/Art DTour follows a crook of Honey Creek running through rural southern Sauk County, stretching west to Plain, the westernmost trailhead for the route.

It’s a bucolic scene of rolling hills, occasional rock faces, and low, wide valleys.

Ballweg wins literacy award


Sen. Joan Ballweg, seen here holding a plaque, was added to the inaugural Honor Roll Class through the non-profit Reach Out and Read Program. The initiative recognizes those who support legislation or other related efforts to improve literacy. Ballweg secured $500,000 for Reach Out and Read from the 2023-2025 budget. Farm/Art DTour returns for 2024


This sculpture was raised during a past Farm/Art DTour, when the event was held in the Reedsburg area. It has since moved to the Plain, Sauk City and Prairie du Sac regions. The tour, which is held every other year as part of Fermentation Fest, features live music, art, food and other attractions. (Reedsburg Independent file photo)

Residents can now explore aviation history

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) recently released an online archive of the Wisconsin Aeronautical Chart that highlights the past 56 years of aviation in the state.
