Emergency Management warns of heat illnesses

Warmer weather has prompted Sauk County Emergency Management and Public Health to warn the public about the risk of high temperatures and humidity.

Sustained temperatures near or over 90 degrees increase the risk of people developing heat-related illnesses and death. Risks keep rising when the humidity exceeds 65 percent. Older adults, people with chronic sicknesses and people who take medications that inhibit perspiration and natural cooling are at even greater risk.

Reedsburg will see continuous hot weather through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Highs will be in upper 80s and 90s.

In recent days, humidity has been spiking between 60 and 100 percent, according to NWS records.

Heat exhaustion symptoms include fainting, rash, fatigue and nausea. Skin may become clammy and moist or hot and dry.

Heatstroke is the next step in heat illness and it can develop within minutes. This life-threatening condition requires immediate medical attention.

If heat-related stress appears, take quick action to reduce body temperature. Move to an air conditioned place or take a cool bath or shower. Applying wet clothing can also help cool a person down.

On hot days, drink more fluid to avoid dehydration. Rapid weight loss can be a sign of dehydration.

Avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day. It’s best to stay in an air-conditioned place, if possible. Fans may be used to improve ventilation but they do nothing when the temperature goes above 90 degrees.

Don’t do strenuous activity during the warmest part of the day.

Be sure to keep an eye on those who are especially susceptible to the heat. The elderly, in particular, are at risk. Take time to check on them during hot weather. Ill relatives should also be watched.

Keep an eye on pets, as well. Make sure they have shade from the sun and plenty of water.
