Reedsburg mayor declares Poppy Week

Reedsburg Mayor Dave Estes has proclaimed next week as Poppy Week.

It was done in light of May 28 being National Poppy Day. Memorial Day is also right around the corner on May 31.

The poppy is known as a symbol of sacrifice, reflecting what’s been given up by U.S. service members who’ve died in the line of duty. Every year, Poppies and poppy themed items are handed out for a donation to support veterans and active military and their families. Veterans organizations are active in distributing poppies. In fact, the red poppy has been the official flower of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1921.

During the week of May 23, the American Legion Auxiliary, including that of Reedsburg Unit 350, will be at sites across town to offer poppies. In most cases, these poppies are handmade by veterans.

Poppies are given out year-round but efforts are doubled around Memorial Day, Veterans Day and National Poppy Day.

Those who are curious about the Legion and its efforts are encouraged to ask volunteers questions. Donations of any amount are also appreciated.
