Reedsburg Public Library’s fall schedule is in full swing for adults with two book discussions, a writing group, and a cookbook discussion on the docket monthly for the foreseeable future. All are held virtually on the Zoom platform.

The evening book discussion is held on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m., while the morning group meets monthly on the fourth Monday at 10 a.m. In September, the evening group will be talking about Attica Locke’s “The Cutting Season.” On Sept. 28, morning participants will be going over Christina Baker Kline’s “A Piece of the World.” These books are available at the library, or via the Hoopla App with your library card number.

Book discussions have become popular at RPL over the past several years, and those who have been shy at first about coming are invariably glad they did! The library facilitator helps direct the discussion but the talks are always informal and relaxed, never like your high school English class! The Zoom format may also seem daunting at first, but once connected, users seem to be able to interact as effectively as they did in person. Reedsburg Public Library’s Memoir Writing group for adults resumes on the Zoom platform, and is hoping to increase in numbers! The group has met for several years, having started as an offshoot of the Palm of the Hand memoir project of Baraboo Public Library and UW-Baraboo. The sessions have evolved over the years with some participants working on individual projects, and others preferring to use the writing prompts provided. The next Memoir Writing group is Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. and first time attendees can register for the Zoom invitation on the library’s homepage. At the meeting writers share the work they have completed since the last session. No work will be expected of first time attendees!

Finally, RPL’s Cookbook Discussion group is meeting on the third Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. via Zoom. In pre-pandemic times, participants would check out a copy of the selected cookbook at the library, prepare a dish from it, and attend the potluck meeting. Via Zoom, the group will again discuss the merits of the cookbook, but without benefit of tasting dishes prepared by others. Participants are invited to talk about a recipe tested prior to the meeting or have a dish prepared to show during the discussion. The selection for Sept. 20 is the plant based “Forks Over Knives” by Del Sroufe. In October the group will discuss recipes from the America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks. The cookbooks are available at the library or on the Hoopla app.

To register for any of the sessions, go to the library’s homepage at reedsburglibrary.org, and select the program from the calendar of Upcoming Events on the left side of the screen. On the day of the program, you will be sent the link and instructions for entering the Zoom meeting.
