RPL welcomes fall next week with an autumnal homeschool program and a cookbook club featuring heartwarming soups. Mark your calendar for several other upcoming events later in the month. As a reminder the library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 12, for staff training.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m., the library’s homeschool group will meet for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) activities with a seasonal theme. All homeschool families are invited to join Miss Stephanie for this first homeschool session of the year. Come develop and test your technical skills with candy corn towers, spider web lacing, and candy pumpkin catapults.
Other youth services programs next week include the new Middle School Monday on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. Students in Grades 6 through 8 are invited to participate in a rousing game of Minute to Win It. The new Story Seekers group (Grades K-2) will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. to read “The Scaredy Squirrel” and do a coordinating activity and craft.
Adults are not left out of the fun next week. RPL’s Cookbook Club meets on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 6 with the theme, Soup for Supper. Cookbooks featuring soup recipes are on display at the library. Check one out to prepare a comforting dish to share with the group. Register on the library’s website, www.reedsburglibrary.org, or call the library to sign up.
Looking further down the calendar, make a plan to attend our first Family Fun Night of the school year, or a special guest presentation. Join our Family Fun Night Spooky Bingo on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m., with music, games and prizes to get into the spooky spirit.
Randy Hoffman, author of “Great Nature Wisconsin,” will be our guest speaker on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. His book highlights natural areas for recreation in Wisconsin. On Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m., Susan Apps Bodlilly will present a program based on her book, “One Room Schools: Stories from the Days of 1 Room, 1 Teacher, 8 Grades.”
The one room school is a popular topic of reminiscences. Recently, Reedsburg Public Library has added many brief histories and stories of one room schools written by area residents and students. These can be found in the library’s Local History Room, and include accounts from Winfield, Narrows Prairie and Maple Leaf schools to name a few.
Library staff continues to scan and upload historical documents to the RecollectionWisconsin website. Recent additions include original letters from the Civil War and an original 1873 roster from Reedsburg’s Patrons of Husbandry Grange #263. Access these documents at recollectionwisconsin.org/institutions/reedsburg-public-library.
