Prairie du Sac’s Bob Nelson honored at Brewers game

Ben Fleming, commander of Sauk Prairie Veterans of Foreign Wars Lachmund Cramer Post 7694, arranged a bus trip to see the Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 20. The 33 passengers were composed of veterans, spouses and friends. Many of the passengers knew there would be a surprising honor for 94-year-old passenger Robert “Bob” Nelson, a Prairie du Sac VFW member. During the game, he was seated several rows behind the Mariners’ dugout. Just before the third inning, he was approached by several ushers to advance to the playing field. While on the playing field, he was introduced as the “hero of the game.” The picture shows Bob Nelson under the scrutiny of a video camera, with his best side simultaneously broadcast on the 12,000-square-foot video screen located in the outfield. Accompanying his video was a scroll of his military history, including enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1951. The Brewers defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-4.
