Historical Perspective: Why do homes have porches?

Porches on homes became popular in America during the early 1900s and were primarily an open space to cool off during the heat and humidity of summer. They served as a transition space between the indoors and outdoors and also provided people with a shaded, open-air space to socialize with their friends and neighbors.
