Historic Perspective: Farm water towers


This rare well-preserved octagonal water tower still stands just north of Highway W on Sunrise Road in Westfield township, where it once provided water storage for the farmstead. (Submitted photo)

In the early days on Sauk County farms, water requirements were essential for the animals and in farmhouses for cooking, drinking and bathing. Initially, that water was obtained using a hand-operated pump. Often times it was up to the young farm boys to pump the handle on a daily basis to provide the needed water.
