Eagles’ tennis team has big week

Sauk Prairie’s girls tennis team continued its terrific start to the 2020 season. The Eagles won three of four matches last week, downing Fort Atkinson, Portage and Reedsburg, and losing to Waunakee. Here’s a recap of Sauk Prairie’s week: • Sauk Prairie 6, Fort Atkinson/Cambridge 1 — The Eagles rolled to a win last Friday, winning all four singles matches and two of three doubles matches. Taylor Haas, Anna Ballweg, Olivia Joyce and Devin O’Connor all posted straight set wins in singles play. “It was an impressive night for our singles lineup, who seized control of their matches early and kept a steady and consistent hold of the points throughout all of their matches,” Sauk Prairie coach Heather Slosarek said. “Anna Ballweg was dialed in and playing some great tennis. Devin O’Connor also surged to an early lead and executed a patient, yet powerful hold on the points in her match.” Camdyn Kastelitz and Hannah Helt, the Eagles’ top doubles tandem, earned a hard fought 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Brynn Torrenga and Ester Jones. And at No. 3, Sauk Prairie’s Faith Holler and Ava Andres posted a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lily Congdon and Alex Theriault. “Faith Holler and Ava Andres used their athleticism and ability to move the ball around the court to win their match handily,” Slosarek said. “Hannah Helt and Camdyn Kastelitz fought well into the evening, finishing under the lights with a tough two-set win. “For our doubles teams, I am looking for them to clean up their shots a little more next week. While we did secure two out of three wins, I feel like we could have been playing better tennis and hitting cleaner shots.”   • Sauk Prairie 6, Portage 1 — The Eagles won all three doubles matches and three of four singles matches last Thursday. “Overall, it was a good night for Sauk Prairie tennis,” Eagles coach Heather Slosarek said. “We were on our third match of the week, so I appreciate the effort of our players to continue fighting through each point.” Hannah Helt and Camdyn Kastelitz posted a 7-6 (4), 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Cassie Ziegler and Naomi Breunig earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while Faith Holler, and Ava Andres rolled to a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, Taylor Haas cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1. Olivia Joyce rolled to 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3, while Devin O’Connor cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4. “Devin O’Connor played a very controlled, patient, and strategic game,” Slosarek said. “She continues to build her confidence to rely on her tennis instincts to help her maintain control of the point.   “Olivia Joyce played a great match moving her opponent front and back with ease. She knows when to go for placement and when to unleash her power. And Faith Holler and Ava Andres also had a confident match, building back their chemistry of baseline and net play.” • Sauk Prairie 5, Reedsburg 2 — The Eagles rolled past the Beavers on Senior Night Sept. 16. “As always, we appreciate the support of our family and community members,” Slosarek said. “The girls, especially our seniors, enjoyed having such a big — socially distant and masked — crowd supporting them.” Sauk Prairie won all three doubles matches and two of four singles matches. Hannah Helt and Camdyn Kastelitz teamed up for a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles. Naomi Breunig and Cassie Ziegler posted a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 2, while Faith Holler and Ava Andres notched a hard fought, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 3. “Naomi Breunig and Cassie Ziegler came out swinging in their opening set at No. 2 doubles,” Slosarek said. “They used the second set to take some riskier shots, which benefited at times and not in others.   “Seniors Hannah Helt and Camdyn Kastelitz managed to stave off their opponents avoiding tiebreaks in both sets. When they work together and use their strengths, they are fun team to watch.  “Faith Holler and Ava Andres had a bit of a rollercoaster match. They played more tentatively than they usually do, which we will chalk up to a full week of rained out practices.” In singles action, Anna Ballweg rolled to a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Olivia Joyce posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. “Anna Ballweg has been dialed into her matches, working the points very nicely from side-to-side and varying her pace on the ball to balance power and placement,” Slosarek said. “She enjoys clipping the line, which makes for some great tennis! “Olivia Joyce was back to 100% after having a slight injury. She played a very versatile game today, dominating baseline battles and moving up to the net for put-aways.” • Waunakee 10, Sauk Prairie 0 — The Warriors defeated the Eagles on Sept. 15. “While the meet did not go our way, it is always beneficial to have strong competition to help us improve our games,” Slosarek said. “I was impressed with our doubles team members in their ability to adapt to a singles game — battling at the baseline a little more, serving double the number of games, and staying in points with players who have spent their entire season practicing and playing singles matches only.”   Sept. 18 Sauk Prairie 6, Fort Atkinson/Cambridge 1 Singles No. 1 — Taylor Haas, Sauk Prairie, def.
