And Sauk Prairie’s girls gymnastics team was soon celebrating. The Eagles notched a thrilling, hard fought 120.10-119.8250 win over host Baraboo on Jan. 8. It was Sauk Prairie’s best team score of the year. “We are thrilled at the victory, as it was a very close competition,” Eagles coach Justine Anderson said. “I was impressed at the girls’ ability to adapt to a different environment, as sometimes competing away does not go as well. There were a couple mistakes on each event that cost us some points, but they made up for it the best they could.”  Sauk Prairie’s Sara Nehring was second in the all-around competition with a 32.350 score. Lexi Hellenbrand was third (30.20), Shannon Tierney was fourth (30.0) and Ava Putnam was fifth (28.250).  Nehring was first on the vault with an 8.40, while Tierney was second (8.250), Kylie Wilson was fourth (8.150) and Hellenbrand was seventh (8.050). On the uneven bars, Putnam was third (6.550), Nehring was fourth (6.450), Hellenbrand was fifth (6.40) and Tierney was seventh (5.950).  On the beam, Hellenbrand was second (7.450), Tierney was third (7.30), Nehring was fourth (7.0) and Carina Meixelsperger was sixth (6.650). And on the floor exercise, Nehring was third (8.750), Tierney was fourth (8.50), Hellenbrand was seventh (8.30) and Meixelsperger was 10th (8.0). “We have Shannon back to compete now, which helps the varsity team a lot,” Anderson said. “But both Lexi and Sara keep improving each meet and continue to add more difficulty to their routines as we go along. We have a lot of depth this season too, so even my top couple of JV scorers are rivaling the varsity scores, which helps keep pushing everyone to improve.” And as that happens, the Eagles are making the most of this unique season. “I continue to be amazed at how much they have already improved in such a short time with limited practices and one coach virtual,” Anderson said. “They have really stepped up as teammates since I am not there and they have to fill in the gaps when it comes to things like moving mats while someone is competing, and I think that helps them feel supported during competitions. They seem to really be enjoying this season despite the pandemic, so I see lots more improvements coming soon.”     WRESTLING Sauk Prairie rolled past Monroe, 48-19, in a dual meet on Jan. 7. The Eagles got pins from Nolan Vils at heavyweight and Colton Uselman at 132 pounds. Sauk Prairie also received six forfeits.   Sauk Prairie 48, Monroe 19 145: Carson Saladis (SP) over (MON) (For.).  152: Jace Amacher (MON) over Evan  Miller (SP), 13-5.  160: Grant Sorg (SP) over (MON) (For.).  170: Aidan Nelson (SP) over (MONR) (For.)  182: Jace Elsing (SP) over (MONR) (For.)  195: Blake Bermudez (SP) over (MONR) (For.)  220: Double Forfeit  285: Nolan Vils (SP) over Isaac Bunker (MON) (Fall 2:58)  106: Double Forfeit  113: Jack Dubach (MON) over David Kingsley (SP) (Fall 0:32)  120: Austin Lankey (SP) over (MON) (For.)  126: Christian Schuh (MON) over Riley Minnete (SP) (Dec 9-4)  132: Colton Uselman (SP) over Anthony Wels (MON) (Fall 3:29)  138: Brady Schuh (MON) over Dylan Breunig (SP) (Fall 1:17)
