On the Same Page: Summer reading challenges and programs at RPL next week
Reedsburg Public Library boasts a full schedule next week with the start of summer reading challenges for all ages, an author talk, and a cookbook club picnic at City Park.
Monday, June 1, marks the beginning of summer reading challenges for both youth and adults. Summer programs begin the week of June 15.
This summer, adult readers (ages 18 and up) are challenged to play reading Bingo. Examples of some of this year’s categories include: Read a book with a red cover, read a book where a library is mentioned, and read the first book in a series. Once you have achieved a bingo by reading across, down or diagonally through the topics, you receive a ticket for an end of summer prize drawing. Readers can earn three individual tickets for bingos on each card, or have the option to fill the card, earning five tickets to put toward the grand prize basket drawing. Grand prize basket categories this year include: Reading, Foodie, Gardening, Local Highlights, Puzzles, RPL swag, and a Kindle. Adult readers can read and complete cards until Aug. 22, simply turn in a completed card for a new one.
The teen reading challenge for ages 11 to 17 is a similar Bingo game. A ticket for the end of summer teen prize drawing is earned for each of three bingos, or if the student fills their card as a blackout, they earn five tickets. Teens may complete as many cards as they would like until Aug. 22.
Youth ages 0 through 10 will receive a reading log. The challenge is to read five days each week, for 20 minutes a day, or for younger children, to be read to for 20 minutes per day. At the end of each week, young readers will have read at least 100 minutes, earning a stamp for their log, a ticket to enter in the end of summer prize drawing, and a spin on the prize wheel. All youth will receive a book at the end of each month for successful summer reading.
This summer, all adult visitors to the library, whether or not they are signed up for a reading challenge, may submit their name for a weekly prize drawing. Five winners will be chosen each week.
On Monday, June 1, Reedsburg Public Library is hosting local resident and author John Pearson for an author visit at 6 p.m. Pearson is the author of “Shaver” and “Getting Lucky,” cozy mysteries featuring fictional Wonder, Wisconsin, and a cast of relatable local characters and menu items. Join us for the introduction to the author’s first two books.
The Cookbook Club will meet on Wednesday, June 3, at 6 p.m. in City Park (weather permitting) to talk about recipes for picnics.
