On the Same Page: Monday Movie Matinee, RIFF Night on library schedule
Reedsburg Public Library’s Monday Movie Matinee and the community Reading is Family Fun Night lead the library’s schedule of events for next week. The Monday Movie Matinee for adults will be held on Feb. 28, at 1 p.m., and will feature one of Sydney Poitier’s most famous films. RIFF (Reading is Family Fun) Night is scheduled at Prairie Ridge Intermediate School on Tuesday, March 1, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The once-a-month Monday Movie Matinee has become a regular part of RPL’s adult services schedule this spring. The Feb. 28 selection is a 1967 film starring Sydney Poitier, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Katharine Houghton. In the film, a newly engaged white woman introduces her black fiance to her supposedly liberal parents at a family dinner. The movie’s subject matter was groundbreaking for the day, before laws against interracial marriage were struck down by the Supreme Court later in 1967. The movie will be shown in the library’s Community Room. Masks will be required.
On Tuesday, March 1, area youth from pre-K through second grade and their families are invited to Prairie Ridge Intermediate School for RIFF Night. The twice-yearly Reading is Family Fun night is sponsored by educators, community groups and local businesses. Some rooms will be devoted to reading, while others will house book inspired activities for the Dr. Seuss theme. The library’s own Miss Jess and Miss Maxine will direct the making of handprint truffula trees like those in “The Lorax,” for decorating the children’s area of the library. Books for free reading will also be provided, along with opportunities to win prizes.
The week of Feb. 28 is also the last week of youth programming for the Winter Session. Teen Time will meet on Tuesday, March 1, at 3:30 p.m. for “slime making.” Babygarten will be held on Wednesday, March 2, at 10 a.m., followed by Reedsburg’s Homeschool Group at 2:00 p.m. This month the homeschool project is Passport Day, where participants will earn stamps as they learn about countries around the world. Preschool storytime will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 3 and 4, at 10 a.m. After School Book Club will meet on Thursday, March 3, at 3:30 p.m. to finish the reading of “The Unlucky Lottery Winners of Classroom 13.”
