A View of the Valley

by Linda Schwanke There are moments in our lives when we become part of a larger whole. Moments when we gather. Moments when we unite as one. Last Wednesday night, Parker Kruse’s vigil was such a moment. A moment without words.  Hundreds and hundreds of people gathered on the familiar slopes of the Wisconsin River at Shifflet’s (Wisconsin Riverside Resort) to pay tribute to Parker and his family. We walked in the dark along the road that was filled with cars as far as the eye could see, an oddly silent walk. Candles for the vigil ran out after 850 were handed away to hands ready to grasp anything that would fill the void with light.  Parker’s parents, Jackie and Joel, spoke of their son with voices quivering but not breaking. Friends and family and Pastor Rob Nelson somehow found words of comfort and grace.  Looking out at the river, a place of great beauty, after the candles began to dim, Chinese lanterns sent soaring to the heavens looked to be spelling a “P.” I hope we can all lead our lives as Parker, so brave and strong and beautiful, always willing to go that extra mile for everyone, who gave his life to save another, did by being kind and brave and giving of ourselves until there is nothing left to give. Hug your kids close, and all those you love. Find moments of joy to hold in your heart to sustain you through moments of despair.
