Letters to the Editor
Dear editor,
As we approach summer vacation, I want to invite you to use this time to get outdoors!
I am a board member of the Friends of the Lower Wisconsin (FLOW), and an avid nature lover. I believe that we are incredibly lucky to live in this part of Wisconsin with all of its natural beauty. Being outdoors clears our minds, improves our mood, and is a great way to be with our friends as well as by ourselves. For more about FLOW go to: www.wisconsinfriends.org.
I want to share with you some ideas of places to visit, and things to do on the Lower Wisconsin this summer.
Here is a link to the DNR Riverway map. If you zoom in it is very helpful in finding access to many riverway locations: https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/Lands/LowerWisconsin/documents/2010_RiverTrail.pdf
Some fun ones to explore are:
Lone Rock--
Long Lake
Bakkens Pond
Spring Green--
Peck’s Landing (under the bridge there is usually a lovely sandbar on the downriver side)
Trails from the school forest on 23 to the river
Arena--
Arena boat landing which usually has a large sandbar/island just off the landing
If you would rather some more land focused outdoor activities I recommend:
White Mounds County Park in Hill Point-- https://www.co.sauk.wi.us/parksandrecreation/white-mound-county-park
Avoca Prairie (only accessible when the river is low)-- https://dnr.wi.gov/topic/lands/naturalareas/index.asp?SNA=68
Spring Green Nature Preserve (cacti and beautiful sunsets over the valley)-- https://www.nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/places-we-protect/...
We, at FLOW, wish each of you a safe, fun, healthy, and happy summer. And, remember, if you are going in the water, a life jacket that fits you properly, and is buckled up is the way to go! There are free to borrow PFDs at kiosks at these boat landings: https://www.wisconsinriverfriends.org/kids-dont-float. Please use them!
And if you have any questions go to our website, or call 608-575-0325.
Happy summer vacation,
Jennifer Moore-Kerr, FLOW board member
Spring Green
