Residents can get rid of prescription drugs on April 24

Sauk County residents will be able to safely dispose of unwanted medications during Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 24 at the Baraboo Walgreens, 603 W. Pine St.

The event is intended for individuals, couples and families, not businesses.

Items that may be brought for destruction include controlled and non-controlled prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, ointments, inhalers, patches, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vape cartridges and devices (batteries removed), vials and pet medicines.

Do not bring illegal drugs, needles or sharps, mercury thermometers, aerosol cans, biohazardous materials (anything containing bodily fluid or blood), flares, personal care products (shampoo, soaps, lotions, sunscreen, etc.), household hazardous waste (paint, pesticide, chemicals, oil, gas, etc.), acids or any vape devices containing batteries.

Blister packages are acceptable without medications already removed. Do not bring plastic pill bottles; put solid, non-liquid medication in a disposal box or clear, sealable plastic bag.

Liquids will be accepted but they must be in their original packaging. This also applies to creams and sprays. Items not in their original containers will not be taken.

Illicit substances such as marijuana and methamphetamines will not be accepted.

The goal is to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposal while informing the public about the risks of abuse and consequences of improper storage and discarding. Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down a drain because water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove them. This results in trace amounts of pharmaceuticals ending up in rivers and lakes.

The event is organized by the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration and P2D2 Program.
