How to save some money on heating costs

As the cold spell continues, Alliant Energy has advice on how residents can try to save some money on staying warm.

For starters, customers should monitor their bills. They can also do this online through their heating provider, as most offer digital account access.

Turn the heat down at night or when you are away.

During the day, open the shades if it’s sunny to allow in some more heat. Close the shades if it’s dark or evening to help retain that heat.

Seal windows and block drafts around doorways to prevent heat from escaping.

Turn off fans. Kitchen and bath ventilation will blow out heated air if they are left on.

Keep garage doors closed unless a vehicle is running.

Limit opening exterior doors.

For your safety, make sure air vents and radiators are not blocked or obstructed, and ensure intake and exhaust are clear of ice and snow. Don’t use ovens or grills to heat your dwelling.

Those who are seriously struggling should call their provider to see if they qualify for financial aid.

Alliant Energy says it is still able to meet demand for heat, despite the need for natural gas increasing.
