Hockey co-op wins regional

For one night, Hakon Peterson played hero. And boy, was it enjoyable for both Peterson and Sauk Prairie’s co-op hockey team. Peterson, a forward from Mount Horeb, scored the game-winning goal with just more than two minutes left and lifted the Eagles to a 3-2 win over Reedsburg’s co-op team in a WIAA Division 1 regional final last Friday. Third-seeded Sauk Prairie advanced to a sectional semifinal against second-seeded Verona. That game was held Tuesday night. The winner of that contest was slated to play the winner of top-seeded Madison Edgewood and fifth-seeded Waunakee in a sectional final Friday at the Omni Center in Onalaska at 7:30 p.m.  Peterson played hero after Reedsburg tied the game, 2-2, with just 6 minutes, 18 seconds left in the game. Peterson’s goal came with 2:19 remaining on assists from Luke Mast and Micah Hanson. That capped a thrilling, back-and-forth affair that was spandex tight throughout. Sauk Prairie struck first when Nick Mast scored just 44 seconds into the contest on an assist from Hanson to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Reedsburg evened things early in the second period, then Nick Mast scored at the 11:11 mark of the period on an assist from Peterson to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. That set the stage for the thrilling final minutes and Peterson’s heroics. Kaden Stracke got the win in net for the Eagles, stopping 20 of 22 shots (90.9%).   SAUK PRAIRIE CO-OP 3, REEDSBURG CO-OP 2 Sauk Prairie  ........… 1 1 1 — 3 Reedsburg co-op ..… 0 1 1 — 2 First period — SP: Mast (Hanson), 16:44.
