Eagles’ girls seeded second

It’s been an up and down year for Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team. But the Eagles did enough good things to earn the No. 2 seed in their five-team, postseason pod. Madison Edgewood is the top seed, followed by Sauk Prairie, McFarland, Mount Horeb and Stoughton. The Eagles will host McFarland in a regional semifinal on Feb. 12. If Sauk Prairie wins there, it would advance to the regional finals Feb. 13 against either top-seeded Madison Edgewood, Mount Horeb or Stoughton. “McFarland is a talented team that shoots the ball well and will be a very good challenge,” Sauk Prairie coach Aaron Andres said. The seeding meeting provided a bit of good news after another rough week for the Eagles. Oregon toppled Sauk Prairie, 50-35, on Jan. 28. That was the Eagles’ fifth straight loss and they fell to 7-7 on the year. Naomi Breunig led Sauk Prairie with 13 points and Maggie Hartwig added 12.   “We had a nice ceremony pre-game for parents and seniors of both schools,” Andres said. “It was a nice moment.” Oregon led, 25-20, at halftime following a frustrating 18 minutes for the Eagles. “We let a lot of opportunities slip by including free throws, transition chances and loose balls,” Andres said. “We also shot under 25%, which is never helpful.” The Eagles trimmed their deficit to two early in the second half, but never could pull even.
