Eagles’ girls remain red hot

Terrific defense. Efficient offense. And contributions from up and down the lineup. Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team is enjoying all of those and has strung together a five-game winning streak. The Eagles won all three of their games last week and improved to 6-1 on the season. Here’s a recap of the Eagles’ week: • Sauk Prairie 57, Fort Atkinson 38 — Naomi Breunig led the way with 19 points, including 15 in the first half as the Eagles cruised on Feb. 5. Kassia Marquardt added 13 points and Maggie Hartwig had eight. Sauk Prairie raced to a 33-15 halftime lead and stretched that to as many as 33 in the second half. In all, nine different Eagles scored. “The girls came out and faced a 2-3 zone and did a nice job of moving the ball and finding open shots,” Eagles coach Aaron Andres said. “Defensively we forced some turnovers for easy points. It was a good team win.” • Sauk Prairie 65, Portage 37 — Maggie Hartwig had a game-high 18 points and Naomi Breunig added 12 as the Eagles rolled on Jan. 7. Hartwig had 16 first half points as Sauk Prairie sprinted to a 37-14 halftime lead. “We earned some turnovers that led to early offense and were able to jump ahead of Portage early,” Andres said. “We used a balanced attack to put the game away.” • Sauk Prairie 49, Richland Center 43 — Naomi Breunig had 19 points and Maggie Hartwig added eight as the Eagles prevailed on Jan. 9. “Richland Center is a very physical team that can play a big lineup and they played a good 1-3-1 zone that forced us to shoot outside shots,” Andres said. “We were able to make some of those and add some good offensive rebounds in order to come out on top.   “It was a back and forth game with leads hovering between one and two possessions, so it was good to see how we would handle pressure.” • On deck: Sauk Prairie hosted Beaver Dam Tuesday, then is at Dodgeville Thursday at 5:45 p.m. The Eagles then host Madison Edgewood Saturday at 1:30. “We now face a really tough gauntlet of games in the next two or three weeks, playing games against ranked teams for our next seven matchups,” Andres said.     Jan. 5 SAUK PRAIRIE 57,  FORT ATKINSON 38 Sauk Prairie ……. 33 24 — 57 Fort Atkinson ....... 15 23 — 38 SAUK PRAIRIE (fg ft-fta pts) — Klemm 1 0-0 2; N.
