Sauk-Heights swimmers post big win

Madison Edgewood’s boys swimming and diving team has won back-to-back WIAA Division 2 state championships. Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights knocked out the champs, though, on Dec. 15. The Eagles finished first in six of 11 events and used their superior depth to topple the Crusaders, 100-68. The Eagles’ quartet of Sam King, Jackson Shavlik, Adam Stecker and Sam Beattie won the 200-yard freestyle. Sauk Prairie’s foursome of Phillip Geiselman, Nick Dunnum, Alex Dunning and Mason Breunig were second in that event. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Zach Guentherman, Evan Leece, Beattie and Matthew Loy were first, while Breunig, Shavlik, Ryan Godwin and Austin Kaukl were third. And in the 200-yard medley relay, Guentherman, King, Loy and Godwin finished second, while the quartet of Kaukl, Daniel Klein, Stecker and Leece were third. Guentherman won the 200-yard IM, while Godwin was third and Leece was fourth. Loy won the 50-yard freestyle, while King was third and Stecker was fourth. Beattie, Leece and Geiselman went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard freestyle. King won the 100-yard breaststroke, while Geiselman was third and Klein was fourth. Beattie and Shavlik were second and third, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle. Loy and Stecker were also third and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Guentherman was third in the 500-yard freestyle, while Breunig was fourth. Godwin was third in the 100-yard backstroke, while Kaukl was fourth. At Sauk Prairie HS.    Wrestling Fort Atkinson toppled Sauk Prairie, 54-15, in a dual meet on Dec. 19. Sauk Prairie’s Riley Minnete pinned Fort’s Dillon Pachowicz in 2:40 at 126 pounds. The Eagles’ Colton Uselman also notched a pin at 132 over Louden Goutcher in just 1:19. Sauk Prairie’s Dylan Breunig also earned a 14-12 win at 138 over Jacob Ashland. Sauk Prairie sophomore Alexis Hellenbrand won the all-around competition with a 31.525 score. Hellenbrand also tied for first on the vault (8.60). At Grand Avenue Elementary School, Prairie du Sac.         Hockey Sauk Prairie’s co-op hockey team has raced to a 3-0 start. The Eagles defeated Beaver Dam, 6-1, on Dec. 15 and toppled Oregon, 5-4, on Dec. 18 to remain perfect on the young season. In the Eagles’ win over the Beavers, Micah Hanson and Hakon Peterson both had two goals. Nick Mast had a goal and an assist, while Caeben Schomber also had a goal and an assist. Eagles goalie Kaden Stracke had 22 saves and finished with a .957 save percentage. In Sauk Prairie’s win over Oregon, the Eagles trailed, 3-2, with 5 minutes left. Sauk Prairie then got goals from Landon Clary, Luke Mast and Erik Peterson in a two-minute window and surged to a 5-3 lead. Clary and Mast both had first period goals, as well, as the Eagles raced to a 2-0 lead. Oregon answered with a pair of second period goals and another at the 11:52-mark of the third to take a 3-2 lead. That set the stage for the Eagles’ fantastic finish. Sauk Prairie goalie Brooks McInerney had 17 saves in the win.
