Editor:   Interesting to read in [October 22 issue of] Star News that Sauk Prairie has seen a rise in COVID-19 cases by 35 - 55% surge in one month, but NOT surprising. For months the health experts have constantly reminded us of 3 simple measures to protect ourselves and others: 1) WEAR FACE MASKS; 2) wash your hands frequently; 3) practice social distancing. Posters have been distributed saying, “WE, NOT ME - TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THE SPREAD OF COVID 19” - a reminder to think not just of ourselves, but also of our friends and neighbors. Yet, I continue to see many people ignoring these measures. I guess the message falls on deaf ears. Why - Ignorance? Inconvenience? Pride? Being contrary? Stubborn? Bad enough that individuals act this way, but when I see some local businesses (not just their customers, but also their employees) ignoring these simple measures, the message they send to me is that they really are NOT “good corporate citizens,” don’t really care about “putting the customer first (despite lip-service to the contrary) and have no regard for the customers who frequent their stores and keep them in business. I don’t need to name these businesses - anyone shopping there can see for themselves - it’s “Profits Over People.”  Maybe a significant loss of business will send them a much-needed message.   Roger Johnson Prairie du Sac   Letter to the Editor   This year’s election is unique. There have been an unprecedented number of absentee ballots requested and submitted, either by mail or early in-person voting. Because ballots cannot be counted in Wisconsin until the day of the election, it will take time to count and record every ballot. This is not a bad thing. We should not expect to get election results on the night of November 3rd. In normal years, the results given on election night are considered unofficial. There is an official verification process to certify the final count, which can take weeks. Because all votes need to be counted, only official results should be accepted by us. This year, especially if it’s a close race for President, we will probably have to wait. This is not a bad thing. Accuracy in the results is more important than speed. We very likely will not know the election results for the President on the night of the election or the next day. It could take as long as a week. It could take as long as a month. We need to be patient. We want every vote to be counted. We need every vote to be counted.   Sue Heintz Sauk Prairie
