Tough week for soccer team

Sauk Prairie’s boys soccer team has a chance to do great things this fall. For that to happen, though, the Eagles must clean up their play in the final moments of games. Watertown edged Sauk Prairie, 2-1, on Sept. 29 when the Goslings scored with no time left on the clock. Two nights later, Reedsburg scored in the 89th minute and earned a 1-1 tie with the Eagles. Sauk Prairie fell to 4-1-1 after the difficult week. Eagles coach Drew Kornish called the loss to Watertown “contentious.” And it’s easy to see why.  The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute when Quinn Baier finished a cross from Joe Baumgardt. Watertown tied the game just one minute later, and it appeared the game would end that way. Sauk Prairie was called for a questionable foul, though, with 8 seconds left in the game, and that was followed by a mysterious clock stoppage. That allowed Watertown to take a free kick just seconds before time expired, one the Goslings converted. “Our inability to finish would come back to haunt us,” Kornish said. “Our first loss of the season came in contentious fashion.” While the ending was certainly controversial, Kornish also knew his team didn’t play near its best. “This was our first away test of the season and it showed,” he said. The Eagles also struggled in their tie with Reedsburg. Sauk Prairie dominated play most of the night and led, 1-0, in the closing moments. But Reedsburg scored in the 89th minute to forge a tie and leave the Eagles extremely frustrated. “An absolute hangover from (Watertown),” Kornish said of the Reedsburg game. “It was a game we dominated, but were only able to come away with a tie.  “Give Reedsburg all the credit for keeping us out for as long as they did and never giving up. It was the second game in a row in which we conceded in the dying moments of the game.” • On deck: Sauk Prairie hosted Madison Edgewood Tuesday, then is at Baraboo Thursday at 7 p.m.   Sept. 29 Watertown 2, Sauk Prairie 1 Sauk Prairie ………… 0  1 — 1 Watertown ………… 0  2 — 2 Second half: SP — Baier (J.
