Eagles capture own triangular

Amy Schlimgen didn’t like what she saw. Neither did her Sauk Prairie girls volleyball team. The Eagles suffered a tough five-set loss to Madison Edgewood on Oct. 1 — one they felt got away. “The general feeling from the team, and I agree is we didn’t play as a team,” Schlimgen said. That changed last Saturday. The Eagles won the Sauk Prairie Triangular — defeating Portage and River Valley on their way to the title. “We played much better on Saturday, much more like a team,” Schlimgen said. “We needed that on Saturday to come back together as a team because we have a tough couple of weeks coming up.” The Eagles opened the triangular with a 25-15, 25-8, 25-15 win over Portage. Olivia Breunig led Sauk Prairie with 11 kills, nine assists and two aces, while Aida Shadewald had seven kills, two aces and one save. Jenna Pistono had 11 assists and six aces, Olivia Paukner had four kills and four aces and Alia Schlimgen had nine digs and five aces. Maggie Hartwig had three kills and two blocks, Anni Braund had three kills and Kaelin Young added one kill. Alexis Klemm had one block and Kaitlyn Brickl had two aces and three digs. Sauk Prairie followed that with a 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 win over River Valley. Shadewald had 10 kills, 13 digs, one ace and two blocks, while Olivia Breunig had nine kills, 13 assists and an ace. Hartwig had six kills and two blocks, Braund had four kills and one block and Schlimgen had 11 digs and an ace. Brickl added eight digs and three aces, while Paukner had five kills, four aces and one block. Pistono had 17 assists and seven digs, and Young added one kill. Sauk Prairie’s victory at its own quadrangular followed a tough loss to Edgewood in which the Crusaders rallied for a 24-26, 25-16, 25-23, 31-33, 15-13 win. Shadewald led the Eagles with 24 kills, 26 digs, two blocks and an ace, while Olivia Breunig had 23 assists and four aces. Schlimgen had 27 digs, 16 good serves and an ace, while Brickl had 13 digs and four aces. Pistono had 16 assists, four aces and eight digs, while Hartwig had six kills and two blocks. Paukner had five kills, five aces and four blocks, Young added two kills and Braund had four kills. “Maybe we put too much pressure on ourselves against Edgewood,” Schlimgen said. The Eagles also rolled past Reedsburg, 25-12, 25-19, 25-13 on Sept. 29. Shadewald had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Olivia Breunig added seven kills, 10 assists, two blocks, three aces and a save. Braund had five kills, Schlimgen had 16 digs, three aces and three assists and Pistono added 15 assists, seven digs, two aces and one save. Hartwig had two kills and two blocks, while Brickl had nine digs and no service errors. Paukner added two kill and three aces, Maddie Ganshert had two digs, and Young added a kill. “We were on fire,” Schlimgen said. “I am guessing Reedsburg will be tougher when we play them next week at their place, because I know they are a team of great athletes. But we really seemed to be in control.” • On deck: Sauk Prairie was at Lake Mills Tuesday, then they travel to Reedsburg on Thursday. The Eagles then head to Wisconsin Lutheran Saturday for a triangular with Waterloo and the host Vikings.   Oct. 3 SAUK PRAIRIE TRIANGULAR Final records: Sauk Prairie 2-0; River Valley 1-1; Portage 0-2.
