Ironton resident cited for dumping 40 tires along roadway

An Ironton mad was cited and had to go clean up his mess after the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office busted him for disposing of tires along a roadside.

Alton Copus, 27, of Ironton was cited for littering and agreed to collect the 40-plus tires that had been left along State Lane, according to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.

On Oct. 1, a citizen complained of littering in the town of Ironton. Town employees said they’d found the tires.

The previous day, a citizen reported seeing a truck and trailer parked in the village of Ironton. The flatbed was loaded with tires. According to the Sheriff’s Office report, each time the trailer was observed with tires, said tires were later found along the road.

Using surveillance footage, the Sheriff’s Office located the suspect vehicle, and the owner was identified as Copus.

Dumping large items on or near any highway is a violation punishable by up to $767.50 for each violation aka deposited item. Objects classified as “large” include tires, appliances, furniture, vehicles, building materials and demolition waste. The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to properly dispose of these items to protect the environment and avoid costly tickets.
