Cody's Movie Minute
Racing into theaters recently was one of the best sports movies of the decade. Ford v Ferrari is a movie based on the true story of how the rivalry between the Ford and Ferrari car companies began. In an attempt to beat their rivals at Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans, a 24-hour race held in France, Ford enlists the help of American automotive designer Carroll Shelby and skilled British racer Ken Miles.
Ford v Ferrari strives in so many ways. First is the cast. Shelby, played by Matt Damon, and Miles, played by Christian Bale, are both at the very top of their game. Their friendship throughout the film feels so authentic and real thanks to the performances of the two leads. And while both do an incredible job and I wouldn’t be surprised to see either of them nominated for an Academy Award for their work here, Bale plays the role of a loving father, caring husband, and hotheaded racer all incredibly well.
Another standout in this film is the work of director James Mangold. Director of films such as Walk the Line and 3:10 to Yuma, Mangold presents high-speed car racing better than I’ve ever seen. The speed and the cars all feel real and as energetic as possible. For fans of racing, this is a must-see. For people like myself who have never had much interest in racing, Ford v Ferrari will make you enjoy it more than ever.
This film is one that feels like it could have been made 10 or 20 years ago. And that is one of its’ biggest strengths. I have a feeling this movie will be well remembered and loved for years to come, whether it be by fans of racing or just anyone that enjoys a great movie. Ford v Ferrari is a movie I think everyone should be racing out to see as fast as possible. Just remember not to drive quite as fast as the drivers in this film.
