Naturally Speaking: False morels

One way to identify false morels is to cut the mushroom lengthwise and look at it. Morels are hollow the whole way through, including through the stem, according to thegreatmorel.com. If the stem or meat are solid, there’s a good chance the mushroom is not a morel and should not be consumed, at least not until you’ve confirmed it’s another fungi safe for humans to eat. (Photo by Jerry Davis)

While waiting for morels to appear under a dead elm, live white oak or nearly dead apple tree, take time to look for other fungi providing clues suggesting the time is near.

But don’t be in a hurry to bite into anything to looks a bit morelish. Some are worthless, others quite poisonous.

Naturally Speaking: Flowering trees

Flowers on hazelnut shrubs are separate but not very showy. The pollen catkins (right) and the tiny pistillate flowers (left) develop at the same time in early spring. (Photo by Jerry Davis)

Deciduous trees and shrubs need to flower, too; during the next month most of that blooming will be occurring.

Those folks with hay fever need not be reminded of this pollen production.

Naturally Speaking: bluebird nest box repairs

Don't throw away that birdhouse just because it has some damage from other animals or birds: Clean it up or fix it to appeal to bluebirds. (Jerry Davis photo)

Are Eastern bluebirds ignoring a nest box after many years of successful fledgings?

It could be that with use and other animals trying to get inside, the entrance hole has increased substantially from a normal 1.5-inch diameter opening to something much larger.
