Two run for 50th Assembly District seat

Republican Tony Kurtz will face challenger Michael Leuth, a Democrat, in the race for the 50th Assembly District.

They will be on the ballot for the Nov. 8 Election.

Both candidates were asked to submit comments for the Reedsburg Independent.

County offers assistance for those with Medicare questions

Open enrollment has begun for Medicare and continues until Dec. 7.

This is generally the only time participants can review and make changes to their Medicare prescription drug and advantage plan coverage for the upcoming year. Sauk County recommends reviewing plans as coverage and costs can change from year to year.

County schools experience shooter hoax

Reports of active shooters last week were proven to be false.

According to Sauk County Emergency Management, schools in Sauk and Columbia counties received calls regarding active shooter situations last Thursday. These were determined to be fake and may have been part of a larger hoax staged nationwide around the same time.

Historical Perspective: Baraboo’s Native American heritage

M.H. Mould grew up in Baraboo during the mid-1800s and was witness to the Native Americans who were living in the area. In the fall of the year, they would come down the Baraboo River in their canoes and dug-outs when the furs of mink and muskrat were at their prime.
